Lahore — The cost of wheat flour has gone up once again, with a standard 20-kilogram bag now selling for Rs1,400 — Rs50 more than last week’s rate.
Flour mill operators say the increase is tied directly to a surge in wheat prices in the open market, where a maund of wheat has climbed by Rs150, reaching Rs2,450 from Rs2,300. According to them, the retail flour price had to be “adjusted” to reflect the higher procurement cost.
But not everyone is convinced. Several traders and market observers argue that wheat prices are under provincial government control, making sudden, steep jumps less likely to happen naturally. They suggest that the situation warrants closer scrutiny, warning that unjustified price changes hurt both household budgets and market stability.
Calls are now growing for the Punjab government to review the price hike and, if necessary, step in to bring costs down — especially with inflation already weighing heavily on consumers.
