In a recent session of the interim provincial cabinet meeting, the Caretaker Punjab Cabinet approved a surplus budget of Rs2.07 trillion for the next four months. Chaired by Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the meeting also addressed various important matters.
The government presented this four-month budget earlier in June, as it lacked the authority to approve a full-year budget in the absence of an elected government. The budget includes an allocation of Rs351 billion for development expenditures to cover ongoing expenses and manage the daily affairs of the province.
The finance secretary highlighted the robust financial position and surplus resources of the Punjab government while presenting the budget overview. Notably, a minimum wage of Rs32,000 for workers, effective from July 1, 2023, was approved.
Allocations in the budget were directed towards critical sectors, with Rs208 billion earmarked for the health sector, Rs222 billion for education, and Rs10 billion for agricultural progress. The cabinet also committed Rs1.80 billion for the National Health Support Programme, Rs5 billion for the Punjab Textbook Board, and Rs7.30 billion to tackle climate change issues.
The meeting emphasized anti-smog measures in various areas and called for strict enforcement of regulations on smoke-emitting vehicles, brick kilns, and ongoing construction projects. The Punjab Price Control for Essential Commodities Ordinance, 2023, also received the cabinet’s approval.
Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja met with Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and cabinet members to ensure free, fair, and impartial elections. The meeting assessed the arrangements made by the Election Commission of Pakistan and the readiness of the Punjab government for the upcoming general elections. Both parties affirmed their commitment to conducting peaceful, impartial, and fair elections and designated a focal person for coordination.
The CEC expressed satisfaction with the steps taken by the Punjab government, and CM Naqvi pledged unwavering support to the election commission, ensuring transparent general elections. The meeting was attended by various ECP members, secretaries, and officials.
